The Placer County Deputy Sheriff’s Association has the following 2008 scholarships. The James B. Machado Memorial Scholarship is awarded to college students, while the Rick Meredith Memorial Scholarship is awarded go graduating seniors. Scholarships were awarded based on academics, extra curricular activities, and community involvement.
James B. Machado Memorial Scholarship - $1,000
Kayla Pepper – Kayla is the daughter of Probation Officer Dea Pepper. She currently attends Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and will graduate in 2009. She maintains a 3.6 GPA and is majoring in nutrition. Although being a busy student she finds time to volunteer her time in the community with Meals on Wheels and Big Brothers and Big Sisters.
Bryan C. North – Bryan is the son of Deputy Sheriff Lynn Carlton. After serving proudly in the US Air Force, Bryan was honorably discharged and currently attends Sierra Community College where he maintains a 3.7 GPA. He plans to transfer to California State University, San Francisco, where he plans to major in creative writing and film production
Charlie Henry – Charlie Henry is the daughter of Deputy Sheriff Frank Domeier. Charlie is attending Calvary Chapel Bible College in Siegen, Germany. Charlie has participated in mission trips to England, Mexico, and Ireland.. Over the summer she plans do to work with the homeless in San Francisco. When not in college she works as an EMT and snowboard instructor; she enjoys traveling and spending time with her family and friends.
Breanna Canclini – Breanna is the daughter of Probation Officer Randy Canclini. She currently attends Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri. Breanna plans to graduate in 2009 with a BS in Psychology and a minor in Physical Education. Breanna also competes on the Evangel University Softball Team.
Logan Hunt – Logan is the son of Deputy Sheriff Dave Hunt. He currently attends Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where he is majoring in General Engineering, with a minor in Business Finance. Logan maintains a 3.96 GPA and is on the Deans List. His hobbies include surfing, scuba diving, snowboarding, bodybuilding, and playing the stock market.
Rick Meredith Memorial Scholarship - $1,000
Haley Burmer – Haley is the daughter of Sheriff’s Sergeant Helen Thomson. She is a 2008 graduate of North Tahoe High School with a cumulative GPA of 3.88. Haley will be attending UC Davis in the Fall where she plans to major in Animal Science. Throughout her high school career Haley has been involved in volleyball, Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band.
Russell Bettencourt – Russell is the son of Deputy Sheriff Laurie Bettencourt. Russell is a 2007 graduate of Del Oro HS and a 2008 graduate of Blair Academy in New Jersey through the West Point Civil Preparatory Scholarship Program. Russell will enter the United States Military Academy at West Point in June with plans to major in Mechanical Engineering and Military Science and begin a career in the US Army.
