โ€œWHY I’M NOT ENFORCING HEALTH OR OTHER ORDERS

While I remain in quarantine, there seem to be those (including from the Governor’s press conference today) who can’t resist connecting my contraction of Covid with my official position of not utilizing armed officers to enforce emergency or other orders. Two distinct things.

I have enacted dozens of measures inside our department to keep our employees and the public as safe as possible, including mandatory mask policies. I am responsible for the welfare of over 2,000 employees. Despite those measures, because of the inherent nature of the necessary work we do, the possibility of contracting the virus is an ever-present reality. I personally have not engaged in any reckless behavior, I generally always wear a mask in public, I don’t engage in activities over the recommended numbers, or dine out when it has been against the rules. Three things, incidentally, we know others have done but been lucky enough to escape infection. Also, every one of my public statements on the matter have urged compliance with ALL safety measures. But alas, I still got Covid, not through some high-risk, flagrant disregard of guidelines, but at work. Though some would like to blame me, and as savory as it would be for some to do so, one would similarly have to blame all 14 million Americans that have contracted the virus, not to mention hold almost 300,000 people responsible for their own demise. That certainly defies logic, and is borderline evil.

Now to my refusal to enforce directives–and they seem to come from everywhere. From public health officers who may not be doctors, from various elected officials, though they are not lawyers or court officers charged with guarding the Constitution, and from unelected bureaucrats who are neither elected by, nor accountable to, anyone. The primary reason is practical–we don’t have the staffing. We still do all the same types of things we have always done, and we don’t have additional time or staffing to take on more.

The second reason requires more introspection. There exist serious questions of Constitutionality, probable cause, and reasonable suspicion that guide our actions as law enforcement officers. We can’t guess, we can’t be wrong, and we can’t take the word of politicians, bureaucrats and health officials that they exist. The legislature is charged with enacting laws, yet these groups want to create ‘laws’ that have the same force and effect.

And even if they were enforceable, what level of force would be appropriate for officers to use to enforce them if folks resist compliance? And what if there is tolerance for SOME violations but not others–say a social justice protest versus a wedding? What if a public official violates them, as we’ve seen on the news, should they be arrested? Should violators be cited at the scene and left to continue violating, or should they be booked into jail? Should we use law enforcement to shut down businesses? What level of investigative resources should we dedicate to determine if somone is out of their home for an "essential purpose"? There are clearly more questions than answers.

As for me, one Sheriff in one jurisdiction, I’m not going to put my officers in that position. I am going to encourage folks to continue to call us when they need us, and assure them that we will show up and help in whatever way we can to make the situation better, not worse. I am going to continue as I have from Day 1 of this pandemic, educating folks when necessary so they can continue to make the best decisions for their and their family’s safety.

I hope most folks can respect that.โ€

Well said, Sheriff Jones! The hypocrisy of Governor Newsome is appalling. What he is asking our LEO’s to do is not constitutional and would further damage the relationship with the public they serve. If the Governor wants compliance, he needs to set a better example.

Good for sheriff Jones. We’ve been “used” long enough by Newsons administration. When he can’t live by what he tells us to do, we’re not listening.

Thank you for understanding. Why go after local small business they just work hard to feed their family . The business didn’t spreading the virus because there are guidelines to follows. People just need to take responsibility when you sick stay home , don’t go out there with someone you don’t know , wash your hand and wear your mask when go out then everything will solved the issue. We can’t sit in fear to closed everything.

Thank you sir for being realistic, practically sensible, and constitutionally abiding leader and citizen.Prayers for healing and protection! Precautions are needed and a must with the use of common sense and science.

I agree 100%!! Thank you for focusing on the real job of enforcing actual laws and protecting the innocent. I don't live in your jurisdiction, but I wish I did.

Need more of them to start standing up and saying enough is enough and not use the Constitution as toilet paper.

Thank you, sir!!!! I'm so elated each time I see a sheriff stand firm on his or her platform to uphold our constitution and the rights we as Americans have. My family prays for all LEO that are having to navigate these crazy times!

Thank you for sharing. I have great respect for our law enforcement community and appreciate the risks you take every day. Until the general population takes personal responsibility to follow guidelines, we will not come out of this. Thank you all for your service. Stay safe out there.
๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

Smart man! He has more common sense than these dictator governors and mayors have. They need to get real, and stop lying to us!

Completely agree, you have swore an oath to uphold the Constitution not to run around at the whim of these hypocritical dictators. Stay safe, stay sane, stay strong #backtheblue ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Good for you Sheriff Jones! Stand your ground and most importantly get better soon!

Most of us now are aware of all these mandates of business closures are not of concern for being at risk, it’s about taking our God given freedom away and abusing their power to control. Because at some point you have to use common sense. Something at the moment our governor and these health officials have nothing of.
Thank you for protecting us, thank you for your service.

Thank you, Sheriff Jones, for all that you and your deputies do to keep our communities safe. Thank you for being the voice of reason and standing up for Sacramento. You are appreciated!

Well said Sheriff. I’ve often thought why do they allow all the protests but not a wedding. Just doesn’t make sense. Thank you for all you and your officers do. You just don’t get enough thanks but too much criticism instead. Stay safe out there and again THANKYOU!

Outstanding Sheriff Jones. You're just opening up liability for your Department if your deputies were to attempt to enforce this "Health Order." The man himself does not subscribe to the rhetoric he spews. May your Deputies stay safe and God Bless.

I can respect that and I respect you. People need to take responsibility for wearing masks, washing hands, and social distancing. It's such an easy thing to do.

Thank you Sheriff. It seems you are one of the few elected leaders who understood your oath to uphold the constitution.

Well said Sheriff Jones! The kind of man that one can call a real leader. A common sense, no nonsense, straightforward, articulate Man. Roll on pard!

I like this man. Anyone that stands up for his people is ok with me.

Wow, common sense! Someone who has power, yet still has common sense. There is only one blame to be handed out for the virus, and it’s not within our borders.

Most laws in this country have two things in common, they were enacted by either a legislative body or voted by us. And also they have a penalty listed. This sheriff is awesome because he sees mandates missing these two very important distinctions.

Love you sheriff!! Thank you for being fair and reasonable and for upholding laws as they should be!

You're not alone … many counties in California are with you and voicing it!! Amen ๐Ÿ™ and blessings to you all!!

You are 100% right. There seems to be two sets of rules one for the general public and another for politicians. Even though i don't live in your country or state anymore keep up your good work.

Thank you Sheriff Jones, and all law enforcement personnel for using common sense over communism and lies!

The black line represents the ultimate sacrifice made by a fellow officer. Law Enforcement agencies observe death of a fellow officer in this way.

God Bless those who gave all for the Community's they Serve.

Why is the badge crossed over? I don't believe in defunding the police or any of that other BS

Thank you Gavin Newsom! Newsom needs to be fired! He has caused so much harm to citizens this year. All those who have been harmed by this policy need to file a class action suit against him for his irresponsible policies!

Lock them up. Normal tax payers, are totally fine with flipping the bill, for criminals to stay behind bars. It’s the liberals, who have a need to release criminals into society.

The community is only being exposed to more victimization. When is it enough to hold our decision makers accountable

Recidivism. Early release because of COVID is not the cause. Recidivism has always been an ongoing occurrence. Why? Because folks with prison/jail records don't get hired. Because many have no job skills. Because some lack education. Because some can't cope with living on the 'outside'. People check out AB109, prop 47, prop 57. I support law enforcement. We have a great team where I live. What bothers me are the subtle innuendos projected through PCD.

Half sounds higher than usual. Is it always that high or has the get out of jail free caused numbers to go up?

Only half? How many reoffended and didn’t get caught? Newsom is the new four letter word for 2020, as in “everything is all Newsomed up,” or “go Newsom yourself.”

Come on, they all knew this would happen. There is no reason in California for any criminal to worry about going to jail and staying there. They know it, they laugh, keep doing the crime and our taxpayers money is wasted on a broken down system.

No surprise, let them stay with Pelosi or nephew Gavin….sure they could keep an eye on them.

California could save tons of money. Lay off the judges, DA’s, Public Defenders and quit wasting money on trials. Why waste all that money to just catch and release? They are just making a mockery of the justice system anyway. The politicians have blamed all of our problems on the police, then turn the criminals back out to prey on the people. Idiots running the asylum.

Sadly I'm not surprised at all. They literally have no consequences now. So why wouldn't they just keep breaking the laws?

What did they expect? The politicians dont care about us or our families and won't do anything to change what's happening until it affects them personally.

I had enough when people started targeting and blaming law enforcement officers

What did they think would happen? Disgusting people running out state.

Placer County has a stealth pilot running housing criminals. Placer Supervisors have shunned their responsibility to have Health and Human Services manage their responsibilities and have contracted out to Gathering Inn and others to "supervise" the homes placed in residential areas. It is not working. Neighbors are complaining of drug use, partying, and catcalls being directed at teens in the neighborhood. One example is a $700,000 home with a pool backing up to open space. I'm sure many of our law enforcement would like to be given such a home to live in. These are real money makers and no notification is given to neighbors. Your homes will all become unsellable when one pops up in your neighborhood. Take benefits away from law enforcement and enable crime throughout our neighborhoods. Time to get these guys out of office.

Do you really think that it would not happen? Seriously they never should have been released so what they get sick. Do we get a second chance to have our family back or to not be raped or not to be kidnapped or molested? NO we don’t!!! So why do they get a second chance? Why do we waste our taxpayers money on keeping them in jail just to be released? If they get the virus ๐Ÿฆ  build a special building to keep them in there to they are well; don’t sick them on us to hurt us or our family again !!!

Another smooth move by Governor ASSHAT…. Releasing prisoners into a climate of chaos is like throwing gasoline on a fire. There are very few jobs available right now and basically none for a convict… This pushes them back into a life of crime….. I really wonder if you have any common sense under your greasy hair…. You’re too busy trying to set up your run for President. You have completely destroyed California and I hope people see your inability to govern an outhouse much less a Country..

Such bs. When there are no consequences there is lawlessness… unfortunately people need to stop protecting their empathy onto people who have none

Do these inmates go through psychological evaluation prior to release? I doubt there is money for that. How many have a home to go home to? A job? Food, medicine? Are they drug addicted or alcoholic? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out ……they will be back. Cold, hungry, sick, mentally deficient, sociopathic? They just do a crime and get back in the "hotel". We are actually REWARDING these folks for bad behavior. In that process we are risking the lives of officers and the general public. The evolution level of a society is measured by how they treat the elderly, the sick, and criminals.
We treat our elderly, sick, and poor very badly. But do a crime and you will have a roof over your head, food in your mouth and free medical care. We have it upside down.

It was done by people who have bought into the narrative that minorities are jailed disproportionately, everyone is basically a good person and deserves a second chance, etc.

But did they get COVID??? Protecting them is more important than protecting law abiding citizens!

50% is better than normal. Recidivism is usually 75%. Either way it is ridiculous. So now they have spread Covid to their families and neighborhood.

This state voted for Biden and Newsom, what do you expect. We are trapped behind enemy lines.

Do you think this was planned as part of the chaos and intimidation? Oh , almost forgot-asking for a friend.

Is that actually a major revelation to anyone?

I think that was written in stone, that they will not stay on the straight and narrow.

This last week the Seattle city council voted to cut even more funding for their police department, right when a social worker was murdered at the building of one of their assignments.

This also comes months after they voted to defund their Seattle Navigation Team, which consisted of police officers, waste management employees AND social workers.

Now a social worker has been murdered. According to reports she was killed by an individual who allegedly had been set-off because they thought their social security benefits were being cut.

This is a tragedy. This was also avoidable. We need to be increasing our partnerships with our social workers, not defunding the programs that take their protections away.

The Seattle citizens should have fought for their police and other LE… but they didn't so now they will see what it is like minimal or no protection…

Such a devastating situation all the way around..when you defund the people that are protecting your city..this will be the new norm, deadly game of roulette…Protect and support the Blue!

I'm sorry, are these folks surprised at what has happened to their city? What the hell did they think would happen when they defunded their police??! I have no sympathy for the mayor or city council members, this tragedy falls in their lap. I feel for the citizens who will suffer the consequences. My prayers go out to the family of this social worker. ๐Ÿ˜ฅ๐Ÿ™

I don't live in Seattle I think about there lives there jobs this small percentage thst is destroying Seattle are being protected by bad leadership. It isnt easy to move, find a new job, leave your family. This is just going to be the beginning this is the new norm. The people voted there for their leadership and the people don't know how to get them out

Changes need to start from the top. Whom ever is the top dog needs to step in and take charge of this critical issue Seattle has instigated. How much more proof is needed to show this is not the answer – defunding????

These big cities are in crisis and they are so naive about the mentally ill and addicted. This innocent social worker and family need our prayers. This country needs a new set of laws to treat these people not laws and DA's that enable sick people to live on the streets.

I don't feel bad for anyone in Seattle. They get what they deserve or they could move. Law enforcement needs to resign and move.

We actually had a friend who watched CNN tell us, ‘defund the police’ will never happen- after it had already happened in Seattle, New York, Austin, Portland, Milwaukee…

Cities that have defunded their police departments are seeing large increases in violent crime. Well, duh!

The city council should all be arrested for being accessories to murder! Maybe if they feel some repercussions for their actions they will take their heads out of their anal orifices!

Ought to make those who passed this ridiculous law do the job. Suddenly they would appreciate the police. This is just plain stupid and short sighted.

Really! The WHOLE police department should leave .Let the almighty city council run the mess they have made.,!!!To the seattle police men an women. No job is worth what you are going through..Take your families an move.Let the city of Gomorrah(seattle).burn.

Why why why are the people in Seattle letting this lawlessness go on? I don’t understand. The mayor, city council should be held responsible for this avoidable murder. And the residents of Seattle it’s only going to get worse! What is wrong with you? Defund the cops? Are you outta your minds???

Seattle seems to be in it's own little world, who cares let people get murdered we must cut back on the Police… I'm not going there…..

I bet Seattle Police Officers are assigned to city council meetings. They should stop going there.

I think the city council needs to endure civil litigation for endangering public servants!

They need their heads examined … it's sad to see the citizens of these cities don't stand up and say enough is enough. You can't tell me they all support this stupidity.

How this agenda for their city council plays out will be interesting. To me it seems the council is working on a short term plan with no thought of long term goals. I think they are alienating their LEO Dept and I hope they don’t lose them before the get everything aligned.

Send in the social workers they said.. .. city's council should step down and be charged with Accessory!

Such a tragic situation, of which could have been avoided. ๐Ÿ˜ข

She was actually the 2nd Social Worker murdered recently in Seattle

Minneapolis did this homicide is at 89% guess that defunding isn't a good idea. But we knew that.

What a horrible senseless crime. Prayers to the family. Prayers to all Police officers being affected by the idiotic stupid crazy sad mad ridiculous dumb funding cuts. They deserve more money not less n they need more officers not less too!!! The country is growing day by day; it just doesn’t make any sense to cut funding๐Ÿ˜ก๐Ÿคฌ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญGod bless all police, sheriffs, etc. I appreciate all that you do. Be safe always!!!

Isn't that what they wanted??? Sending social workers out instead of cops???

Can't they be ousted? Surely the public can do something about this.
